Viv Mullett – The Flying Fish Studios

After a long career as a graphic designer and illustrator, sometimes painter and printmaker, I am pursuing an even longer-held passion for paper by learning how to make it, as a new creative venture. If you are old enough to remember Picture Book in the early days of children’s TV, you might remember the sound of scissors cutting through thick paper. It was a sensation I could feel and even taste, as well as hear. It took me years to find the right paper and scissors to reproduce that sound, and I think my love of paper was born out of watching that programme in the late 1950s.

I am very much a novice, but hugely enjoy the process. Making paper is very labour intensive – it takes time, and you have to wait for the end result, which can be a mystery. Paper is organic and responds to atmosphere and humidity, so it changes depending upon the weather, and loves to absorb moisture from the air, and there’s plenty of that in Wales.

This is a new website, and at the moment it simply shows the kind of paper I’ve been making and what I’ve been doing with it. A blog section will eventually record trials and tribulations, information about the processes, the hiccups, the successes, plus bits and pieces that might be interesting for some of you. It isn’t only about paper, but also about the books I sometimes create and other work, such as prints and paintings.
